Nuclear fusion occurs within the Sun’s core. Artificially duplicating this process can lead to the production of large amounts of energy.
Scientists from Japan’s National Institute of Quantum Science and Technology say they have created a “plasma” that plays an important role in nuclear fusion reactions. NHK reported this.
Scientists have noted that they have created a state of matter at a large-scale nuclear fusion experimental facility called JT-60SA in Ibaraki Prefecture, located north of Tokyo. The installation was developed jointly by Japan and the European Union and cost about $435 million.
To achieve nuclear fusion, the “plasma” must reach a temperature of more than 100 million degrees Celsius, and the nuclei must collide at a speed of one thousand kilometers per second.
The institute claims that experts can now create “plasma” with a temperature of only 10 million degrees. And for nearly five years, they have also been working to obtain the technology needed to maintain “plasma” at a temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius for 100 seconds.
Nuclear fusion, created artificially, can be a new generation of energy source that does not emit carbon dioxide and does not produce high levels of radioactive waste.
It was previously reported that Chinese scientists had stumbled upon a previously unknown mineral.
