Astronomers have made a video of a stellar eruption that occurred about 180 years ago. The video was published on the YouTube channel of NASA’s Chandra Observatory.
Scientists relied on an observatory that spent 20 years tracking the explosive history of the star known as Eta Carinae.
This system contains two massive stars. One of them is about 90 times the mass of the Sun, and the other is about 30 solar masses. In the mid-19th century, people on Earth watched Eta Carinae temporarily become one of the brightest stars in the sky.
During this event, which astronomers call the Great Eruption, Eta Carinae ejected between 10 and 45 times the mass of the Sun. This material became a dense pair of spherical gas clouds, now known as the Homunculus Nebula, on either side of the two stars.
The Homunculus Nebula is the bright blue cloud in the center of the image, powered by high-energy X-rays coming from two massive nearby stars.
It was previously reported that the Hubble telescope took an image of the galaxy SDSS J103512.07+461412.2, located 23 million light years from Earth.
