Archaeologists excavating the Valley of the Temples in Sicily discovered a collection of sacrificial figurines. This was reported by Heritage Daily.
The Valley of the Temples is part of the ancient city of Agrigento. According to the Greek historian Thucydides, the city was founded around 582-580. B.C. Greek colonists from Gela in eastern Sicily, and later colonists from Crete and Rhodes.
Since 1997, the Valley of the Temples, covering 13 square meters. km, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and is known for being one of the most beautiful buildings of the ancient Greek civilization. Among the most famous temples: the Temple of Concordia, Juno, Hercules, Zeus, Castor and Pollux, Hephaestus and Asclepius.
It is also home to Theron’s tomb, a large pyramid-shaped monument that scholars believe was built to commemorate the Roman dead of the Second Punic War.
Recent excavations have unearthed more than 60 figurines: half-figures depicting animal heads (protoms), female busts, oil lamps, small vases and bronze fragments.
“The findings allow us to understand the dynamics of the destruction of Agrigento in 406 BC by the Carthaginians, when the inhabitants had to flee in the direction of the city of Gela,” said representatives of the memorial site.
