According to local residents, Corsican cats often attack sheep, and also love to feast on goat and sheep milk.
On the island of Corsica, scientists have discovered a new species of cat with a special genetic identity, according to the French scientific publication OFB.
The existence of this animal, which the locals call cat-fox, has been known for a very long time. Since the 20th century, this population has been subject to more or less accurate and sometimes false descriptions. However, the accidental capture of a wild-type cat in 2008 marked the beginning of a research program for an animal living in the wild in Corsica.
Thus, the first genetic analysis showed that these individuals were not European wild cats. And a new study that used a genomic approach and high-precision sequencing showed that Corsican cats are quite similar to Sardinian cats, but are still a separate species.
Now, scientists will examine more Sardinian cats from the Middle East and the Mediterranean to learn more about the Corsican species.
