The acceleration of the development of artificial intelligence and its penetration into all manufacturing industries is an unstoppable force of change. Artificial intelligence is a technological revolution comparable to a steam engine, a conveyor belt, or process robotics. And, as with previous industrial revolutions, the transformation of jobs will be profound and irreversible.
It is clear that this hits all the alarm bells: will my job disappear, will a car replace me, am I outdated and doomed to inactivity in work?
Of course, some workstations will disappear. Many others will change, but there will also be many new ones. This is to be expected from a technological revolution, although it may be the most profound since the invention of the steam engine.
AI, almost human?
Artificial intelligence is gradually penetrating into all spheres. Even in the activities that we have always considered inherent in a person: the ability to talk, reason, creatively solve problems. Even the ability to create new concepts or artistic expressions.
Whether we think about creativity or artistic composition, artificial intelligence never stops taking giant strides. In the past year, new imaging systems such as Dall-E, Stable Diffusion or Midjourney have emerged capable of generating reliable and very high quality images for any conceivable concept.
In the field of text composition, ChatGPT showed the general public the current capabilities of AI.
more and more present
Artificial intelligence is already having a tangible impact on social areas such as education, healthcare or citizen security. It can be used to help teachers, health and security workers do their jobs better.
We are also seeing how it affects key manufacturing sectors, from rural to urban, from manual labor to digital services. Or for highly specialized jobs, from architecture to law practice. Also for development softwareincluding the creation of new artificial intelligences.
In a global and interconnected world, it is impossible to isolate or avoid this change. The solution is to accept this and evolve with new technologies.
Adapting to change
As in the case of other technological revolutions, there will be a period of profound transformation of work (which has already begun), when some jobs will disappear, while others will transform and evolve.
Some will even improve their productivity, quality and reliability, especially those that manage to successfully combine human and machine work.
It is important that social and political agents help ensure that this process of transformation is orderly and leaves no one behind.
If we can properly manage this change, we can end up better than we started.
