crowded field galaxies was captured in the latest space telescope image James Webb belonging POT.
In it you can see galaxy spiral, in particular, LEDA 2046648, It is located more than a billion light-years from Earth, in the constellation Hercules.
Instrument calibration
One of the main scientific problems James Webb is to watch galaxies distant, and therefore ancient, in order to understand the details of their formation, evolution and composition. Webb’s sharp infrared vision helps the telescope travel back in time as the light from galaxies older and more distant ones are redshifted towards infrared wavelengths.
This particular observation was part of Webb’s campaign to commission the Near Infrared Imaging Device and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS). In addition to independent scientific activities, NIRISS maintains parallel observations with the Webb Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam).
NIRCam captured this galaxy-filled image while NIRISS observed the white dwarf WD1657+343, a well-studied star. This allows astronomers to interpret and compare data from two different instruments and characterize the performance of the instrument.
important research
Comparing these galactic fossils to modern galaxies will help astronomers understand how galaxies grew to form the structures we see in the universe today.
James Webb also investigates the chemical composition of thousands galaxies to shed light on how heavy elements were formed and built as they evolved.
