Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Maria del Carmen Alva, criticized the government led by President Pedro Castillo for reaffirming diplomatic relations with the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic. With this in mind, the Popular Action MP also questioned Foreign Minister César Landa about the decision and described the Arab state as a group of “nomads” consisting of “40 tents.”
“We all know that this Sahara Republic is 40 tents on the territory of Algeria. and that it is not recognized by the United Nations, and out of 24 Arab countries, they only recognize one. They are not recognized by any Arab countries, nor by anyone. So why does Peru have to recognize 40 carp in its territory? Because we know about people who have been there and seen 40 tents. In practice, they are considered nomads,” he said during a speech at a presentation by Foreign Minister Cesar Landa.
In response, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that there are main directions in the national foreign policy, which are regulated by issues of peace, development and security. In this regard, he believed that Peru had confirmed its “Respect for the rights and self-determination of peoples”.
“This issue of the Saharan Republic has certainly sparked the public debate that we are seeing. But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a long-term policy, and although the world is changing, there are basic lines such as peace, development or security, which are the foundations of the world system after World War II. And respect for the rights and self-determination of peoples is part of it. And it saved Peru. Although there have been changes in Eastern Europe or other regions, these lines have survived forever. All this is based on the logic that foreign policy is led by the President of the Republic, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for the development, implementation and implementation of this policy. And this policy is based on universal principles, be it United Nations commitments or national commitments,” he said.
Pedro Castillo supported the “right to self-determination” of the Sahara Republic in front of the UN
Recall that on September 20, President Pedro Castillo, during his speech at United Nations General Assembly.
“Peru restored diplomatic relations with the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic. and strongly supports their right to self-determination. We offer our widest support to the countries that the Representative of the Secretary-General should carry out in order to restore the ceasefire in Western Sahara and help achieve a negotiated peaceful solution,” the President said.
