The head of the public ministry, Patricia Benavidez, introduced on Tuesday a team of prosecutors who will deal exclusively with the investigation of deaths during anti-government protests that took place between December 2022 and March this year.

With regard to this working group, consisting of 12 prosecutors and chaired by Mariana Mendoza Sanchezthe national prosecutor confirmed that, together with him, “we want to guarantee to all Peruvians that the investigation will be completed as soon as possible with the identification of those responsible.”

He also indicated that they would receive technical assistance from United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Peru.

66 people died and more than 1,000 were injured

As is known, the resolution published on Monday in the Official Gazette Peruvian manthe prosecutor’s office has formed this working group, the purpose of which is to investigate “cases of victims during social protests so that it can focus exclusively on crimes committed against humanity (…) and ordinary crimes that constituted cases of human rights violations and others.”

This document recalls that since the protests began after the failed coup d’état of the former President Pedro Castillo “Prosecution investigations have been carried out in relation to the alleged commission of crimes as a result of the excessive use of public force, which could affect the human right to peaceful social protest.”

Also for acts of violence “which do not fall within the protected constitutional basis of the right to protest” and which “affected the physical integrity of officials and servers, as well as the infrastructure of various government organizations and private property.”

According to data from OmbudsmanIn four months of protests, 66 people were killed and more than 1,000 were injured.

This has led various national and international human rights organizations to denounce the illegal use of force by the security forces.
