Head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, General Manuel Gomez de la Torreblamed the deaths of six soldiers who drowned in the Ilawe River on “attackers” who were among the “locals” who threw stones at them, in the province of El Collao, Puno region.

“The reason we crossed the river was because we had nowhere to run, they were about 800-900 people They practically surrounded us. They started throwing rocks at us. There we began to cross the river. It was the only way we had to save our lives as officers, soldiers and technicians,” said one of the surviving soldiers.
However, after the accident, some residents near the Ilawe River tried to rescue the drowning soldiers, helped them out of the stream, and even provided them with blankets to keep them warm.
So far, soldiers David Lakiticona Kosi (19), Juan José Garabito Ticona (18) and Jarli David Aguilar Copa (24) have been hospitalized with hypothermia at El Collao Health Network Emergency.
