Pioneering event will provide sexual reassignment and professional training in Manaus
The surgeries will be performed by a team of eight urological surgeons, selected by the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU), in three simultaneous rooms. The event will also train around 150 professionals from various areas, such as law, social services and health, to deal with the specific demands of the trans and intersex population.
Conceição Maria Guedes Crozara, president of the organizing committee, highlighted that the Conference will mark the beginning of a new chapter in public health in Western Amazonia, with the possibility of HUGV becoming the first hospital in the region to perform these surgeries on an ongoing basis.
Urologist Ubirajara Barroso Jr., leader of the surgical team, highlighted the importance of the Journey in reducing the long wait for these procedures in the SUS, especially for intersex people, whose visibility is even more restricted. Barroso Jr. also commented on the research that will be conducted with the intersex indigenous population, aiming at producing a pioneering scientific study.
The event includes lectures and mini-courses aimed at expanding knowledge about transsexuality and intersexuality within the public health service. Luiz Otávio Torres, president of SBU, reinforced the urgency of preparing the country to serve these populations with quality and support, highlighting the need to decentralize and replicate knowledge about these specific surgeries.
