In the film, Page plays Sam, a man who returns home for a family reunion after undergoing gender transition. The scene in question involves Sam’s mother, Miriam (Crewson), who accidentally misidentifies him. Sam quickly corrects his mother, who becomes emotional, causing him to need to comfort her, despite the fact that she was the one who made the mistake.
In an interview with The Guardian, Page reflected on the experience, explaining that despite being frequently misgendered, he doesn’t mind unless there’s a harmful intent. “I want to be clear: I wouldn’t correct Wendy as me. I would say, ‘It’s OK. Let’s move on from the moment. It takes a second.’ But, you know, I’m not me. I’m Sam here. And that moment was so perfect because that’s what happens,” the actor explained.
Page also shared his perspective on being misgendered in real life, emphasizing the importance of the intention behind the mistake. He stressed that when a slip-up occurs from people close to him who want to make things right, he doesn’t take it personally. “When someone will apologize, that’s great. But let’s move on to the next moment of our interaction. Let’s move on before it becomes something bigger and turns into this whole other energy,” he said.
“Close To You,” which features much of its improvisation, explores questions of identity and belonging, providing Page with an opportunity to bring a deeply personal and authentically performed experience to the screen.
