Benefiting from a public policy, the band took advantage of the opportunity to compose, arrange and record the tracks in a short period of three months. From the first rehearsals, the sound and the concepts of the lyrics were worked on in a collaborative and fluid way.
Aygam’s musicality is a tribute to black music and its manifestations. The EP rescues ancestral sounds from a contemporary perspective, reflecting the experiences of Afro-Brazilians in the outskirts of the city. Inspirations include Cassiano, Negro Leo, Itamar Assumpção, Jards Macalé, Arrigo Barnabé, Luiz Melodia, Liniker, Nação Zumbi, Sodomita, Sé da Rua, Manobra Feroz, Quixote, Pamkapauli, O Rappa and Charlie Brown Jr.
The work also carries a powerful message of insubordination and resistance. The lyrics address themes of struggle, confrontation and triumph over everyday adversities. “All the songs have a tone of revolt and our compositions highlight this combative stance, each in its own way,” says Gabú.
The opening track, “Crocodiles”, features a boombap rhythmic cell, with a melodic chorus and lyrics that evoke the confrontation of systemic ills through one’s own defense mechanisms, such as Axé and religion. The track addresses faith in Ogum and the strength to face the challenges of everyday life.
Next, “Eucaliptos” has a psychedelic and atmospheric sound, with lyrics that draw an analogy between monocultural society and interpersonal relationships that undermine individuality. “Vida Cobra”, the third track on the EP, presents a post-punk sound, talking about the daily struggle, hard work and overcoming limits. “Cobra” represents the necessary vigilance against those who crawl, while “Vida Cobra” symbolizes the demand for the adversities faced.
Finally, “Depois do Papo Reto é só Deboche” comes to close the album with Brazilian influences from the 70s, addressing themes such as transphobia and the hypocrisy of people who claim to be educated, but perpetuate old-fashioned opinions about youth. “May our message reach those who are interested in reaching it. Nothing more than that”, conclude the artists.
