The research will be conducted online, through a voluntary questionnaireand in person in workshops held in 15 Brazilian states throughout the second half of 2024. The in-person activities will provide spaces for welcoming, exchanging experiences and active listening.
The resulting report, “TRAVIARCAS: Diagnosis of the challenges for the aging of Brazilian transvestites and transgender women”, will seek to analyze the situation of this group, which faces a life expectancy considered low in the country. The study will address aspects such as access to education, health (physical, psychological and sexual), work, income generation, public safety, access to justice and economic rights.
In addition to the online form, the research will include in-person workshops led by Keila Simpson, the first Brazilian transvestite to receive an honorary doctorate from UERJ, and Rubra Pereira de Araújo, a doctor of literature and professor at the Federal University of Tocantins. During the meetings, the specific rights of this group and strategies for overcoming challenges related to access to rights already achieved will also be discussed. Each participant in the focus groups will receive a financial stipend.
The aim of the research is to provide data that contribute to the formulation of public policies aimed at older transvestites and transsexuals, expand ANTRA’s network of activities in Brazil and create a support network for aging trans people. Once completed, the report will be available on ANTRA’s website for free access and will be presented in Brasília in 2025.
The research team includes Cecília Barbosa, a Philosophy student and PIBIC CNPq scholarship holder; Ronna Freitas de Oliveira, a PhD student in Literature and temporary professor at UEPG; Yara Canta, a defender of Human Rights; and Yuri Alves Fernandes, a journalist and author of LGBT+60.
