“Today’s march is a collective construction, a historic milestone for Mato Grosso”
The 1st March of Trans Visibility in the History of Mato Grosso was held last Friday, the 17th, with the support of the City of Cuiabá, through the Municipal Secretariat for Women, together with the Brazilian Institute of Transmasculinities (Ibrat-MT), the National Connection of Transsexual and Transvestite Women (Conatt) and the Women’s Defense Center (Nudem) of the Public Defender’s Office of Mato Grosso.
The march route was approximately 1.3 kilometers, starting at Praça Alencastro, in front of Cuiabá City Hall. The walking route included: Praça Alencastro (concentration point) – Rua Treze de Junho – Praça Ipiranga – Praça Bispo – Avenida Getúlio Vargas – Praça Alencastro.
“We liven up the square with diverse representations, both from the trans and LGBTQI+ communities, in addition to counting on the support of important organizations such as the Public Defender’s Office, the Public Ministry and other non-governmental entities”highlighted Elis Prates, Deputy Secretary for Women.
The movement sought to approach public institutions to promote greater visibility for trans people and demand engagement in the creation of public policies related to health, combating violence and structural prejudice.
Only 4% of the trans female population in Brazil has formal employment. Furthermore, the life expectancy of a trans person in the country is only 35 years, according to a report by the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (Antra).
“Today’s march is a collective construction, a historic milestone for Mato Grosso, as we are taking to the streets to demand basic rights that the trans and transvestite population still cannot access,” said Julian Takanã, state coordinator of Ibrat-MT.
The Public Defender’s Office of Mato Grosso offered the name and gender change service without the need for legal action. “We offer all the necessary legal assistance for name and gender change services during this historic event, which provides much-needed visibility for the trans movement”highlighted Rosana Leite, public defender.
