Alexandre Vidal Porto’s book uses irony to tell the story of Luís Delgado
Sodomitebook of Alexandre Vidal Portotells the story of the 17th century of a Portuguese man accused by the Church of the crime of sodomy and is expelled from the metropolis towards the colony.
The story is based on the experiences of Luis Delgado and is given a touch of fiction by the author Alexandre, in the novel, the actor discusses prejudice, persecution and homophobia with irony and criticism.
In the work, the reader will learn the story of Delgado who reinvents himself in Salvador, and from being a “sodomite” he becomes a “respectable” merchant, in addition to entering into a sham marriage and indulging in pleasure with the boys from the colony.
“This story fell into my lap by chance. I was reading the History of Homosexuality and came across the case. Then, Luiz Mott gave me other texts and I thought: ‘That makes a book’”, said Alexandre Vidal Porto to Metropolises.
“In the case of the Sodomite, there is an additional aspect. The book was written in times of Bolsonarism, when there was a very prevalent feeling among sexual minorities of quadrupled oppression, a heavy atmosphere. The work comes as a manifestation that we exist, a manifestation of existence”, he completed.
The ironic tone of the book is found in the mix between “archaic false Portuguese” and contemporary language, in addition to the combination that Vidal classifies as “pastiche”.
“I wanted the text to have an artificial, falsified flavor, to give a feeling that you are in another time, until you discover that it is ironic”, scored.
