Both physical activities can be practiced by people of different age groups.
With the rush of everyday life, yoga and pilates are practices that improve the quality of life and help to slow down the pace. Although they are low-impact activities that work on balance, physical conditioning and body movement, these modalities have differences and different objectives for those who practice them.
Because of some similar benefits, it is common for some doubts to arise when deciding which modality to choose. Therefore, Pedro Coelho, Physical Education professional at TotalPass, explains the main differences between the two physical activities. Check out!
yoga
yoga is one modality focused on physical and mental balance, with ancient Indian techniques. Bringing together breathing exercises and body movements through meditation, the practice seeks to promote people’s well-being by working on postural issues.
“In addition to the fundamental purpose of promoting a sense of inner peace and emotional balance, the yoga they improve physical conditioning, control blood pressure and heart rate and reduce mental symptoms, such as stress, anxiety and excessive worry”, explains Pedro Coelho.
Always aiming at the comfort of those who practice the modality, yoga has as its main equipment the mat to base the execution of the techniques. The modality also presents results in increased concentration, being a great option for those who need to pay close attention to work and studies.
pilates
Created in 1920 by the German Joseph pilates, the modality acts as an effective tool for the treatment of pathologies such as arthritis, arthrosis and in the fight against postural problems. With the purpose of developing self-control of the mind over its own body, pilates presents basic fundamentals and important: centralization, concentration, control, fluidity, precision and breathing.
“The Pilates principles are present in the classes through movements that improve body awareness, promote increased bone density, increase flexibility and physical resistance,” says the expert.
“Unlike yoga, which only uses the mat, pilates can be practiced with your own body weight and also using your own equipment. A practice regular use of the modality is effective in treating postural problems, such as deviations and pain in the spine”, he adds.
Who can practice each modality?
Both physical activities can be practiced by people of different age groups, with or without limitations, due to the low impact of performing the exercises. From the proposals and benefits provided by yoga and pilates, it is possible to align the objective you want to achieve with the results delivered by the application of the techniques.
“It is important to emphasize that, despite the modalities presenting a low risk of injury for practitioners, it is necessary that the exercises are guided and accompanied by a qualified professional”, concludes Pedro Coelho.
