Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso threatened to dissolve national assembly and to call early elections if the political process promoted against him by opposition groups continues, as he believes that the charges against him are unfounded and only serve partisan goals.

“No one has done more to fight corruption,” Lasso said in an interview with the Financial Times, in which he analyzed the various scenarios he was offered. He wants to avoid at all costs – “because it’s wrong,” he pointed out – being removed from office, which is the “most likely” hypothesis according to the current majority.

Lasso, who plans to appear before the legislature to defend himself against the accusations, confirmed that he would be prepared to invoke a constitutional clause known as “death on the cross” whereby the president can dissolve the Assembly if, for example, there is “a serious political a crisis”.

This path involves the appointment of not only parliamentary elections, but also presidential ones. At the same time, Lasso confirmed that he would again be a candidate: “I have obligations to my voters.”

The political lawsuit against Lasso, which if successful would mean the resignation of the President of Ecuador, is based on money laundering charges stemming from an agreement signed by a public company. diskette and that, according to control, caused the country a loss of about 6.1 million dollars. The contract in question is still valid, although it was signed in 2020, under the government Lenin Moreno.
