Today, the 31st, Marvel Comics is celebrating! That’s because the world’s largest comic book publisher is celebrating its 85th anniversary. To celebrate the date, there have been activations in official stores, product launches and, of course, special posts on social media.
The mood is celebratory, but besides the date, do you know how Marvel Comics came about? RECREIO has separated the main information about the emergence of the publisher below; check it out:
The beginning of a dream
It all started in 1939, when Martin Goodmanwho at the time was the editor of the pulp magazine, noticed that, with the arrival of “Action Comics #1”, responsible for introducing Superman, a new demand began to grow: that of stories starring superheroes! Thus, he created Timely Comics (which would later be called Marvel Comics), a publisher whose first story was published that same year, on August 31st.
The pioneer among the plots was titled “Marvel Comics #1”, and was responsible for presenting the first characters of the seal, among them, the first two superheroes of the House of Ideas, Human Torch and Namor, the Sub-Mariner, created by Carl Burgos and Bill Everettrespectively.
As reported by the ScreenRant portal, the plot was an instant success, selling more than 80 thousand editions, which made it Googman saw an opportunity to grow the business and, to do so, hired Joe Simon and Jack Kirbythe duo that created Captain America, a hero who earned his own magazine, “Captain America Comics #1”, in 1941.
Curiosity:Carl Burgos and Bill Everettin addition to creating the first Marvel heroes, they were also the precursors of the plots in which two or more heroes face each other, seen for the first time in “Marvel Mystery Comics #8-#10”, a title that also defined that the characters belonged to the same universe, an idea that was taken forward and even gave rise to the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, also known as MCU.
It is worth remembering that, in addition to Burgos and Everettanother name that has been with Timely since the beginning is Stanley Martin Lieberwho in 1939, got the position of assistant. In 1941, his trajectory would change, as he was promoted to acting editor after Simon and Kirby migrate to DC Comics, gaining the opportunity to write new stories about Captain America, signed under his pseudonym: Stan Lee.
Near the end of the Golden Age of comics (1938 – mid-1950s), the publisher began to bring out diverse narratives that also presented new genres such as horror, science fiction, and even romance, most of them written by Stan Lee in the post-World War II period. During this brief period, the publisher was renamed Atlas Comics.
Soon, at the end of the 50s, superhero stories became popular again, making Goodman brought back the plots that started the publisher and, to compete with DC Comics’ Justice League, Lee and Kirby created the Fantastic Four, released in the title “The Fantastic Four #1” in 1961, under the company’s new name: Marvel Comics!
The change in the name of the comics division did not happen in a dramatic way, since it was not only on the cover of the first magazine published by Timely, but had been appearing in several titles launched between the 1940s and 1950s. The important thing is that, since then, Marvel Comics has become one of the main names in pop culture, making history not only on the pages, but also on movie screens, TV and streaming through adapted plots.
