The country is facing The La Niña phenomenonwhich has caused drought in several regions of the center and south of the Sierra and may soon affect other regions of the country.

According to him Peruvian Center for Social Research (Cepes)farmers face difficulty planting food due to lack of rain and frost wave

“In the mountains, where the largest number manufacturers the countries that grow the most rain-dependent crops feel this drought the most,” said Laureano del Castillo, Cepes researcher and chief executive.

The expert notes that rains usually fall between November and March, but due to various factors such as climate change, farmers have suffered from water shortages.

“Most of Agriculture In the country, this is part of what is called family farming, that is, farmers who work directly with their families in the mountains, who have few resources, little land and water. They make up, according to the latest census, 97% of all farmers in the country,” del Castillo said.

Products to be affected

Faced with this situation, the Cepes specialist notes that the impact of rains in the mountains leads to a decrease in the supply of products due to the impact on the crop.

At the moment, the products most affected by the drought are rice, potatoes, corn and quinoabut the effect can be seen in others as well, such as avocado, mango, and lemon.

Given this pretense, del Castillo points out that this will affect not only the country’s markets, but also export volumes.
