The European Emergency Gas Coordination Group assessed the consequences of ending the agreement on transit.
The termination of the transit of Russian gas by the Ukrainian gas transportation system (GTS) does not affect either the energy security of European countries or consumer prices on the market. European Commission representative Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said this at a briefing, Interfax-Ukraine reports on Monday, January 6.
“It happened as expected, for more than a year we have been working intensively with our member countries, as well as with Ukraine, to prepare in advance for such a scenario. Last week, an emergency gas coordination group met to assess the consequences of the end of the transit agreement , concluding that there are no problems or concerns about the security of supplies for the European Union at the end of the transit In terms of prices, the markets consider that this and we have not seen an increase of the price in the new year,” she said.
According to Itkonen, market fundamentals remain stable.
“Demand remains weak at around 18% of pre-crisis levels, with (gas) storage levels also above pre-crisis levels,” the EC spokesman said, recalling “Record levels of renewable energy in Europe” presentation.
At the same time, he said that with the start of the colder months, the European Commission is “closely monitoring the member states to also monitor the price situation.”
We remind you that on January 1, Ukraine stopped the transfer of Russian gas to Europe. President Vladimir Zelensky called the stoppage of transit through Ukrainian territory one of Russia’s biggest defeats.
The European Commission has confirmed that Europe is ready to stop sending Russian gas to Ukraine from January 1.
