The main purpose of building the Reni-Giurgiulesti checkpoint and the “green corridor” is to increase the actual throughput capacity by at least five times.
Ukraine started negotiations with Moldova and Romania on the creation of a “green corridor” between checkpoints on the road Reni (Ukraine) – Giurgiulesti (Moldova) – Galati (Romania) to speed up the movement of goods and exports of agricultural products. The Ministry of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure announced this on Wednesday, October 25.

This became the main topic of negotiations with the participation of the Deputy Head of the Department, Minister Sergei Derkach, together with the representatives of Moldova and Romania.
“The proposal to introduce a “green corridor” includes several measures for all three countries. First of all, we are talking about joint control between Ukraine and Moldova and coordinated control between Moldova and Romania. Thanks to this decision, we will be able to reduce the number of stops for trucks and accordingly speed up control. Worldwide, this decision will allow us to solve the issue of comprehensive infrastructure development on the Ukrainian-Moldavian-Romanian border,” said Derkach.
The ministry recalled that these checkpoints are close to each other and strategic for goods transported by car to ports, including Romanian Galati.
To create a “green corridor”, in addition to the introduction of joint control, many other decisions are needed, including the construction of the Reni checkpoint. In this case, the representatives of the regulatory authorities of Moldova will be able to carry out all the necessary procedures when leaving Ukraine.
Derkach also reported on Facebook that in order to speed up the movement of goods and the export of agricultural products in Romanian ports, joint customs and border control with Moldova will be introduced at the Reni checkpoint.
“We are starting to work on the repair of the checkpoint. We plan to implement general control starting next year,” he wrote and added that this project will allow trucks to make two stops instead of three – at the exit from Ukraine and at the entrance to Romania.
The plan for the launch of the “green corridor” also provides for the reconstruction of the Reni-Galati road and its expansion from two to four lanes, as well as additional technical equipment for checkpoints.
Currently, the Reni-Giurgiulesti checkpoint handles around 50 trucks per day. It is one of the main checkpoints on the road leading to Romanian ports. The main purpose of building this checkpoint infrastructure and the “green corridor” is to increase the actual throughput capacity by at least five times.

Let’s remember that on October 10, President Vladimir Zelensky announced the creation of a new grain corridor through Moldova and Romania. Today, almost 60% of the total volume of grain exports from Ukraine is transported through Romania.
