Former Vice Minister Energy and mines Pedro Gamio mentioned the blockade that affects various regions of the country and has led to fuel shortages, especially LPG (CIS). Gamio focused on the case of Madre de Dios, where cisterns were blocked right in the midst of illegal activity.
“There are 87 blocked points. This results in LPG shortages as well as food shortages. One of the most critical cases can be mentioned. Puerto Maldonado is locked down for 21 days and they didn’t even want to agree to a truce on Saturday or Sunday. This is even more alarming when it is reported that some tankers arrived in Madre de Dios, but they were blocked right at the height of the southern inter-oceanic highway, adjacent to the area of illegal activity. the only ones with fuel are illegal activities and the population suffers from food shortages. and lack of energy. We recently became convinced that if it were not for emergency operations, they would not have had any medicines or drinking water, ”he said in Air Rotary.
“In the medium term, we need to move to measures that mean energy security, such as the massive use of gas in the regions. There, too, the Congress faces an unresolved task to allow the conditions of price and possibilities that Lima also has to reach the regions with what is called the equalized tariff. A year has passed since this project has been frozen. There is already an opinion and we hope that soon we will have a norm that according to the criteria that the gas pipeline that reached the center of Peru, to Lima, was also partly paid for by all users from Tacna to Tumbes. The way to thank people who live outside of Lima is that they have the same opportunity with much cheaper fuel.”, he added.
The influence of the CIS on families
Pedro Gamio specified that more than eight million families benefit from LPG. However, he stated that Camisea’s gas is no longer enough to cover all the needs of the population.
“We are talking about more than eight million families. The vast majority of Peruvian families use CIS. It is also true that almost 30% of this LPG depends on imports, because Camisea gas no longer produces all the LPG that Peruvians need. Actually, methane is what we have in sufficient quantities for 23 years of cheap gas in Peru,” he concluded.
