The Liberal Party (PL), formed by Jair Bolsonaro, will have to pay a fine of 22.9 million reais (about $4.3 million) for demanding the annulment of votes in last October’s presidential election, according to the decision Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) released this Wednesday.
The fine was imposed by the chairman of the highest electoral commission, Alexandre de Moraes, after he rejected a request from Bolsonaro’s party and noted that the formation’s behavior was “a bad-faith trial.”
The lawsuit filed by the PL, which supported the far-right leader’s candidacy for re-election, questioned 61% of the electronic ballot boxes used in the October 30 runoff election.
On request TSE He replied that he would be able to analyze this issue only if doubts regarding electronic ballot boxes also arose in the first round, since the same devices were used in both cases.
In the same first round, legislative ones took place, in which PL received 99 deputieswhich would give him his first minority in the lower house from next year.
This Wednesday, the formation admitted that it found no “problems” at the polling stations in the first round of elections, but confirmed that there were in the second round, and insisted on “checking” the votes that gave the victory Luis Inacio Lula da Silva.
According to the TSE president, the petition does not contain any indications justifying the revaluation of some of the ballot boxes.
“The plaintiff’s complete bad faith in his extravagant and unlawful claim, allegedly insulting to Democratic rule of law and carried out in an inconsistent manner to encourage criminal and anti-democratic movements (…) was proven both by the refusal to add the original petition, and by the complete absence of evidence of violations and by the presence of a statement of facts completely falsified,” the judge said in his decision.
In the second presidential round, Lula won with 50.9% of the vote, compared to 49.1% received by Bolsonaro, in a process approved and recognized as transparent by all participating national and international observer missions.
Given the order of the highest electoral body, the PL announced that it had already engaged its legal advisors to review the decision of the TSE.
