The Secretary General of NATO said that this war will probably end in peace talks, but they will be based on the situation on the battlefield.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on NATO allies and partners around the world to continue to support Ukraine. He said this at the UN conference on climate change, the press service of the Alliance reports.
Stoltenberg was quoted as saying that Russia’s war against Ukraine will end at the negotiating table.
“Of course, like most wars, this war will probably end at some stage at the negotiating table. But what happens at the negotiating table is mainly related to the situation on the battlefield,” said the Secretary General of NATO.
He added that an “acceptable result” at the negotiating table and the preservation of state sovereignty can only be ensured if Ukraine has strength on the battlefield.
“If the Ukrainians give in to Russia’s demands and accept that Russia can come in, invade Ukraine, and then withdraw from it, then there is a risk that it will push the Russian Federation into a (new – ed.) attack, and it will achieve more after each attack,” said the NATO Secretary General.
He stressed that the Alliance is not participating in the war, but supports Ukraine in upholding the right to self-defense.
“If Ukraine stops fighting, they will stop existing as an independent state,” Stoltenberg stressed, adding that if Russia stops, there will be peace.
As reported, the United States and NATO are not ruling out the start of peace talks in the war in Ukraine if Ukraine retakes Kherson. In turn, the Presidential Office announced that the liberation of Kherson would give Kyiv leverage to demand the complete withdrawal of the Russian army from Ukrainian territories and the continuation of dialogue.
