The deal also includes logistical support and additional packages of equipment and services provided by the US government.
Romania has agreed to buy 32 American F-16 fighters from Norway, which the Scandinavian country’s army previously used. On Saturday, November 5, Le Figaro reports.
On Friday, Norway announced that it will sell 32 used F-16 fighter jets to Romania for 388 million euros.
Initially, Norway valued the cars at 490 million euros, but as a result of the auction, which lasted almost a year, the transaction value was significantly reduced. The agreement, signed against the background of the war in Ukraine, concerns the supply of aircraft, spare parts, as well as the maintenance and training of technical personnel. The supply will take place in 2023 and 2024 after the modernization of the aircraft, the Norwegian Ministry of Defense said.
“The agreement will be an important contribution to strengthening the air force of a NATO ally and at the same time will bring profit to the state of Norway,” said Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram.
In the 1960s, Norway selected American General Dynamics’ F-16, ordering 60 single-seat and 14 double-seat versions. The latter aircraft was withdrawn from service at the beginning of the year in favor of the more modern F-35 of the American Lockheed Martin. Oslo plans to buy up to 52 new aircraft.
For its part, Romania has expressed interest in buying Norwegian F-16s in 2021 to replace aging Soviet MiG-21s.
Earlier on Friday, the United States announced the provision of $400 million in military aid to Ukraine. This package also includes T-72 tanks and other equipment.
It was also learned that Italy is preparing a sixth package of military aid to Ukraine.
