The two-year war in Ethiopia has ended

The central government and the regional separatists formally signed a peace agreement. Its implementation will be monitored by a specially created group of representatives of the African Union.

The Ethiopian government and separatists in the Tigray region have reached a peace deal after two years of civil war. This was announced on Wednesday, November 2, by former Nigerian President Olusegan Abassagno, who headed a group of mediators in the negotiations, Reuters reports.

“Both sides of the conflict in Ethiopia have officially agreed to cease fire and disarm consistently, appropriately and in concert,” Abasanyo said.

He noted that the agreement also provides for “the continuation of law and order, the continuity of services, unimpeded access to humanitarian supplies and the protection of civilians.”

“The peace process is not ending now. The implementation of the peace agreement sign today is critical for success,” insisted the leader of the group of negotiators.

He added that a specially created group of representatives of the African Union will monitor compliance with the terms of the peace agreement.

It was noted that negotiations on the conclusion of the agreement continued in the Republic of South Africa for just one week.

As you know, the civil war in Ethiopia has lasted for more than two years and has claimed the lives of thousands of people, two million have been forced to seek new homes, and hundreds of thousands have been threatened with starvation.

It will be recalled that a few months ago, the Ethiopian authorities announced the destruction of more than 300 militants.

Earlier in Ethiopia, 17 people were killed in a drone attack in the Tigray region. The blow came on the same day that Ethiopian Prime Minister Ahmed Abiy held talks with US President Joe Biden.
