The Prosecutor General’s Office announced this on Tuesday. New York and State Governor Kathy Hochul, in reference to the Buffalo supermarket shooting that left 10 people dead last May, concludes that deep web platforms like 4chan radicalized shooter Payton S. Gendron shortly before the attack.
The report also concludes that streaming platforms such as Twitterwere used as a weapon to advertise and encourage violent attacks, and that “the lack of oversight, transparency, and accountability of these platforms has contributed to the spread of extremist and hateful opinions online, leading to radicalization and violence.”
Shortly after the massacre, in which the victims were mostly black, Attorney General Letitia James announced that she would open an investigation into the social media that Gendron used to plan, promote and broadcast his attack.
Gendron, 18, who was charged with domestic terrorism and 10 counts of murder, left a 180-page manifesto outlining his racist and white supremacist ideas and detailing his attack plans.
Prosecutor’s report
For this report, prosecutors reviewed thousands of pages of websites used by the shooter, including 4chan, 8kun, Reddit, disagree, Twitter D YouTubeand other platforms, and on them he found Gendron’s graphic shooting content or manifesto, including platforms facebook, Instagram, Twitter, tik tak D bolt.
As part of our investigation, we looked at how the platforms were used to spread and promote memes, racist and anti-Semitic messages, and share graphic material about previous racially motivated violence.
The prosecutor’s statement details how several large platforms were used to broadcast the shooting to incite other violent acts, and how the video of the shooting circulated online.
In short, the prosecutor noted, the report confirms that various online platforms played a “clear role” in the attack, “radicalizing the shooter first, consuming a lot of racist and violent content, helping him prepare for the attack, and finally allowing him to pass.”
Hochul and D. A. James are currently advocating state and federal reforms, including legislation that would make it a crime to post images or videos created by a criminal, and people who distribute or publish those images or videos, will be punished.
As part of their ongoing reforms, they recommend changes to the federal law on Communications Integrity increase the accountability of online platforms and require them to take reasonable steps “to prevent violent and illegal criminal content on their platforms.”
