Preliminary investigations by the Danish police and military confirmed that the damage to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines was caused by “powerful explosions”.
Police in Copenhagen on Tuesday cited investigations carried out at “crime scenes” in the Baltic Sea in cooperation with the army and the Norwegian Police Intelligence Service (PET).
“Research has confirmed that Nord Stream 1 and 2 received significant damage in the Danish exclusive economic zone, and that this damage was caused by powerful explosions,” the source said.
The Danish police also announced that based on these preliminary results, a joint investigation team with PET will be set up to further clarify the case, which will cooperate with the competent authorities in Denmark and in Norway.
However, the statement emphasizes that it is “too early” to announce the scope of international cooperation with Germany and Sweden, among other countries.
This is because there are multiple actors involved and that a different agency is handling the case in each country, they pointed out after German media reported this week that the Swedish and Danish authorities were unwilling to cooperate. for security reasons.
The Copenhagen police also stressed that it is currently impossible to predict when the investigation will end.
Russia rejects sabotage
The Kremlin said on Tuesday it was “absurd” to try to accuse Russia of sabotaging gas pipelines. Nord Stream 1 and 2, after the Copenhagen Police (Denmark) reported that the damage to both infrastructures was caused by “powerful explosions”.
“At least from the statements we heard from Germany, France and Denmark, this a priori investigation was aimed at asserting responsibility (for sabotage) on Russia. This is absurd,” said the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov. his daily telephone press conference.
He added that the data of the Russian intelligence services point to something completely different, hinting that, as Moscow said, the biggest beneficiaries of sabotage on gas pipelines Nord Stream These are the USA and Ukraine.
“Moreover, you just need to understand with the help of the most elementary logic that such sabotages cause great harm to Russian interests,” Peskov stressed.
He regrets that the investigation was carried out without the participation Russiawhich is a co-owner of gas pipelines.
“We do not have the ability to conduct field work and conduct our own investigation,” he added.
diversionary hypothesis
pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 were not working at the time of the accident, since the Russian company Gazprom stopped gas supply to the first in early September, after reducing the flow throughout the summer, and the second has not yet come into operation.
The Swedish and Danish authorities proceeded from the first moment of the sabotage hypothesis and, like the rest of the Western countries, suspect Russian authorship.
