If the dynamics of diversification continue, the EU will receive at least 65 billion cubic meters of gas from other suppliers.
One of the main takeaways from the EU’s efforts to deal with the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is that Europe is moving away from dependence on Russian gas faster than predicted. Ursula von der Leyen said this in Strasbourg at a press conference following the meeting of the Board of the European Commission, reports Ukrinform.
“At the beginning of the war, when Putin started to weaponize gas, and these tactics of his became clear to us, we decided to completely cut off Russia’s gas supply. At the time we had this discussion eight months ago ago. , we said that it could take several years, until 2027 or even until 2030. But this process has become faster. The process of diversification from Russian gas supplies has gained enormous acceleration,” stressed the President of the European Commission.
According to him, if the dynamics of diversification continue, the EU will receive at least 65 billion cubic meters of gas from other suppliers, not from Russia. At the same time, by the end of this year, EU countries will be able to save up to 50 billion cubic meters of gas, which is a significant result of joint efforts.
“The energy crisis is unprecedented. We have been working hard in recent months amidst the collapse of the energy markets and have made progress. We have reduced demand – in September we saved up to 15 percent of gas from total consumption. We have filled our gas storage – now we have 92 percent of us. We have radically diversified the supply routes from Russia in favor of reliable suppliers: the Russian part in imported pipeline gas has dropped to nine percent, so almost two-thirds of gas supplies from Russia have been reduced,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
He emphasized that thanks to a combination of efforts, EU countries have achieved their goal and be better prepared for the passage of the winter season.
Recall that in the first nine months of 2022, Gazprom exported 86.9 billion cubic meters of gas to non-CIS countries, which is 40.4% (58.9 billion cubic meters) less than in the same period last year.
