Washington and Moscow, within the framework of START III, have reported on the number of strategic weapons that both sides have.
The United States and Russia exchanged notifications on the number of strategic offensive weapons of the two countries under START III. This was stated by the Russian propaganda news agency RIA Novosti in connection with a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday, October 14.
The report says “the number declared by the United States is not taken into account: 41 B-52H heavy bombers (declared converted) and nuclear warheads counted behind them, 56 Trident-II SLBM launchers (declared converted) and 4 ICBM silo launchers (named practice mines).
“The Russian side cannot confirm that these strategic offensive weapons were brought to a state that is not suitable for the use of nuclear weapons by heavy bombers and SLBMs,” the Russian ministry said.
The Treaty between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START III) is a bilateral agreement between Russia and the United States on the further reduction of each other’s deployed strategic nuclear weapons arsenals.
This document provides for a reduction for each side of deployed nuclear warheads to 1,550 units, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) and heavy bombers (TB) to 700 units.
