Amsterdam Schiphol cannot handle the large number of passengers because it is understaffed.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has asked airlines to cancel flights on Monday, September 12 from 16.00 to 23.00. The reason for this is the lack of staff, as well as long queues. This was reported by NOS.
In particular, they are talking about airlines whose passengers leave hall 3. The reason for the queue is the lack of security personnel, a representative of the airport explained to the publication. According to the airport, queues were observed throughout the day on Monday.
This situation has been going on for months. The first major problems began in late April and early May. Baggage workers quit their jobs en masse because they want better working conditions and higher pay.
Employees previously received an additional 5.25 euros gross per hour. The so-called summer surcharge was applied to security guards, cleaners and ground handlers and brought little relief. With the end of the summer season last week, the summer aid season also expired, explained the FNV trade union.
According to him, the summer allowance helped to solve the problems in the short term: “But it is clearly not a permanent solution, so the problems reappeared.”
The Netherlands airport is one of several in Europe, including London’s Heathrow, struggling with staff shortages and rising demand following two years of COVID-19 restrictions.
