Paleontologists discover 500,000-year-old elephant tusk in Israel [VIDEO]

The Israel Antiquities Authority announced Wednesday the discovery of a half-million-year-old complete 2.5-meter elephant tusk in the south of the country.

The find corresponds elephant Straight-cut (Palaeoloxodon antiquus), found near Kibbutz Revadim, on the southern plain Israel.

“Exceptionally well kept”

“From our previous archaeological excavations at Revadim, we knew that the site was founded during the Late Lower Paleolithic period, as we found flint and stone tools, as well as the remains of animal bones, including elephantsbut finding a tusk in such good condition is something else,” said Avi Levy, AAI prehistorian.

According to Levy, it is “the largest single fossil tusk found in the Middle East.”
