Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed holding early presidential elections in the country this fall. He said this in a speech with a message to the people of Kazakhstan at a joint meeting of both houses of parliament on Thursday, September 1.
“As you know, the next presidential elections should be held in 2024, parliamentary elections in 2025. I propose to hold early presidential elections this fall. A new mandate of people’s trust is needed for a successful implementation of comprehensive reforms on the path to the creation of a just Kazakhstan,” said Tokayev.
He emphasized that the interest of the state was above all for him, so he was ready to go to the early presidential elections, despite reducing his own term of office.
Tokayev also proposed a seven-year presidential term with no right to re-election.
“On the one hand, seven years is a sufficient period for the implementation of any ambitious program. On the other hand, limiting the mandate of the president to one term will ensure that the highest focus of the head of state on solving strategic task of national development,” he said.
In addition, Tokayev proposed to hold parliamentary elections in the country in the first half of 2023 instead of 2025.
