Budapest allowed Russia to build two VVER-1200 power units to increase the capacity of the Paks nuclear facility.
Rosatom received permission from the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority for the construction of the Paks-2 NPP. This was announced by the regulator on its website.
Russia plans to build two third-generation VVER-1200 power units to double the capacity of the Paks nuclear facility.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said the government hopes to commission these units by 2030. The atomic regulator’s decision opens the way to this.
The Paks nuclear power plant was built according to the Soviet project. It has four VVER-440 power units with a total capacity of 2000 MW, launched between 1983 and 1987. Their service life will expire between 2032 and 2037.
Documents on the construction of 2 new power units of the Paks NPP (Paks-2) with VVER-1200 generation 3+ reactors were signed by Rosatom and the Hungarian MVM at the end of 2014, but the project was slowed down due to the long procedure for upon obtaining approval from the European Commission.
Recall that on August 25 Zaporizhzhya NPP for the first time in history was completely disconnected from the network. Lines of communication in the Ukrainian system were damaged as a result of the continuous shelling of the Russian Armed Forces. President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine is one step away from a nuclear catastrophe.
Earlier, the IAEA said they intended to visit the ZNPP in early September.
