Iran is enriching uranium to 60% purity, which is above the 3.67% limit set by Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.
Iran has the technical capability to develop an atomic bomb, but has no intention of doing so. This was said by the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammed Eslami, Reuters reported on Monday, August 1.
It is indicated that in this way Eslami responded to the comment of Kamal Kharrazi, senior adviser to the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, that Iran may have an interest in developing nuclear weapons.
“As Mr. Kharrazi said, Iran has the technical ability to create an atomic bomb, but such a program is not on the agenda,” Eslami assured.
It is known that Iran is already enriching fissile uranium to 60% purity, well above the 3.67% limit set under Tehran’s 2015 nuclear agreement with world states. Uranium enriched up to 90% is suitable for making a nuclear bomb.
On Sunday, Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator said Iran responded to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell’s proposal to save the nuclear deal and was committed to a quick end to the talks.
In 2015, the UK, Germany, China, Russia, the US, France and Iran signed a JCPOA. The deal includes the lifting of sanctions against Iran in exchange for limiting its nuclear program as a guarantee that Tehran will not receive nuclear weapons.
In May 2018, former US President Donald Trump decided to unilaterally withdraw the United States from the agreement and reinstate tough sanctions against Tehran. In response, Iran announced a gradual reduction in its obligations under the agreement, waiving restrictions on nuclear research, centrifuges and the level of uranium enrichment.
It will be remembered that earlier in the United States they said that President Joe Biden is ready to lift the sanctions on Iran under the JCPOA.
