The Pentagon is deploying ships and aircraft to the region amid a possible visit by Nancy Pelosi to the island.
The US military is moving forces, including aircraft carriers and large aircraft, closer to Taiwan ahead of an expected visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. On August 1, Nikei Asia reports.
It noted that the Pentagon initially opposed the speaker’s visit to Taiwan, “but now seems to be creating a buffer zone for Pelosi’s plane in case she decides to make a controversial stop.”
Earlier, a journalist from the Taiwanese network TVBS wrote Twitterthat the speaker should arrive on the island in the evening of August 2.
As you know, on Monday, August 1, Pelosi and her delegation landed in Singapore as part of a tour of the Indo-Pacific region, where the speaker will also visit Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.
Plans for visiting Taiwan are still unconfirmed.
US naval assets in the region include the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, and the amphibious assault ship USS America, according to Nikei Asia.
In addition, the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, the landing helicopter dock USS Essex and 36 other warships, as well as three submarines, are in the Pacific Ocean.
Also, flight tracking websites show that two HC-130J Combat King IIs, intended for the evacuation of US Air Force personnel, arrived in Okinawa from Anchorage. They were accompanied by several KC-135 Stratotankers.
It will be recalled that China has threatened to “take action” in the event of a possible visit by Pelosi to Taiwan, which she considers her territory.
