The states and the European Union are preparing to sign an agreement when Washington passes new requests. Opinions are divided into EU regarding further actions.
US president Donald Trump during Washington negotiations this week threatened to introduce a tariff of 17% for exports of food and agricultural products from Europe. On Friday, July 4, reports the Financial Times.
This step was mentioned at the last moment, in which EU officials were characterized as an increase of a transatlantic dispute, occurred when two giant traders were to end an agreement.
Until recently, EU officials have hoped that negotiations in the United States will remain at the base rate level. It is unclear whether 17 percent of food will be added to the other tariffs that Trump declared, or rather than them.
The EU is trying to provide its own exceptions for certain products. One of the Brussels officials said the details of the aircraft and alcohol were among the goods where the block achieved the exceptions. Both parties work on a five -page project of a “main agreement”, but so far there is a very little agreed text.
European Commission president Ursula Von der Lyain said he relies on a major agreement, which will allow the parties to continue communicating in anticipation of the final agreement.
According to the publication, EU Commissar Marosh Shefchovich warned a 17 percent duty for agricultural food on Thursday at Washington meetings. On Friday, 27 the ambassadors of the member states were known.
Shefchovich has repeatedly described a change in EU policies in favor of the United States as a red line. However, the EU also goes to deregulation, weakening certain environmental laws.
EU countries are divided between adoption of some higher tariffs on the exchange of certainty and those who want to take steps in response to forcing the United States to compromise.
Two EU diplomats said they were informed that the United States had three situations for July 9, which is the last term for the conclusion of an agreement that sets Trump more than 60 countries:
-
Countries with the “main agreement” will retain 10 percent tariffs with possible additional concessions at another stage;
-
For countries that could not reach such an agreement, tariffs would return to the level announced in April until an agreement was reached;
-
Higher tariffs will be applied to countries, which, according to the United States, will not settle in good faith.
The European Commission said they were being promoted by negotiations, while preparing for the fact that a satisfactory agreement could not be achieved.
Earlier on June 27 it was reported that the United States had signed a trade agreement with China and plans to terminate a similar agreement with India.
