Will review the decision
This is the second time this committee has met following an assessment of an international emergency. in Junealthough, given the increase in incidence in different regions of the world, it was decided to analyze again this optionwhich will increase the readiness of national health networks.
“I remain concerned about the large number of cases in more and more countries”, pointed out at the opening of the committee the Director-General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesuswho pointed out that although a decrease in infections has been found in some countries, this trend is not yet general.
Tedros added that so far most cases have been among men who have sex with other men and warned of stigmatization that the group could suffer because of this circumstance.
He also pointed out that there was not enough information on cases in East and Central Africa, where is the disease endemic for decades, although in the current outbreak most of the infections have been identified in Europe.
An international state of emergency may be declared when an infectious disease spreading in many countries in an uncontrolled way while governments must take special preventive measures to stop its spread.
In 2020, the WHO declared such an emergency, still in place, due to COVID-19, and has also introduced this measure in recent years due to several outbreaks of Ebola. (EFE)
