Latvia has declared May 9 as a day of remembrance for the victims of the war in Ukraine

Latvia’s Saeima approved a bill declaring May 9 as a national day of remembrance for those killed in Ukraine – civilians and defenders of the country as a result of the Russian Federation’s military aggression. The proposal was supported by 61 deputies out of 100. On Thursday, April 7, writes Delfi.

According to the new law, May 9 will be a day of mourning in Latvia, in connection with which it is forbidden to hold mass entertainment and festive events in the country. Besides, in May, 8th and 9th salutations are banned in Latvia.

By law, on May 9, the national flag of Latvia in the design of mourning will be raised near the buildings of state institutions and residential buildings, as well as near the residence of the President of the country, the main building of the Seimas and the government. Next to the flag of Latvia will be placed the flag of Ukraine.

It is learned that some opposition deputies in the debate have called to choose another date for this purpose, for example, February 24, arguing that the designation of mourning on May 9 looks like a secret attempt to ban the May celebration. 9 and “use the tragedy in Ukraine for internal political purposes.”

For example, Latvian diplomats resumed their work at the Latvian embassy in Kyiv.
