Two people have died from botulism in Ukraine since the beginning of the year

In Ukraine, since the beginning of the year, 41 people have been ill for botulism, two deadly cases have been registered. This was announced by Deputy General Director of the Center for Public Health, Alexei Danilenko in the air of telemarathon on Thursday, June 5.

“So far, we have information about registered 31 Botulism focus, of which 41 people were injured and among them four children. And, unfortunately, in 2025 we had two deadly cases because it was a serious disease that could lead to complications and even deaths,” he said.

According to Danilenko, botulism occurs as a result of poisoning through botulinum toxin, in particular, due to the consumption of food that is dirty with botulinum toxin.

Among the first symptoms of botulism – visual impairment, speech, dry mouth, general symptoms, such as fatigue, dizziness. Also, in symptoms, there may be damage to the digestive system, stomach disorders, bowel bleeding.

The first symptoms can appear both after a few hours from the moment of consumption of damaged foods, and after 10 days. Sources of infection can be fish, meat, prepared at home, lazy, dried river fish.
