German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes that the European Union can no longer afford to maintain the norm of national veto power (i.e. the need for such decisions to be taken unanimously by all EU countries) when making decisions on foreign and security policy if the European Union wants to maintain a leading role in the world politics .
According to Scholz, Russia’s war in Ukraine makes unity in Europe even more urgent and reinforces the need to end the “selfish blocking” of European solutions by individual member states. This is stated in an article by Scholz, published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper, Reuters reports.
We simply can no longer afford to impose a national veto, for example, in foreign policy, if we want to continue to be heard in a world of competing great powers, Scholz notes.
The chancellor noted that in the coming months, Germany will submit proposals on a common European migration policy, building a European defense, technological sovereignty and the sustainability of democracy.
Recall that Hungary recently blocked the introduction of the sixth package of EU anti-Russian sanctions for a long time, demanding for itself exceptions in the oil embargo.
