Wood may need to help people who overcome climate change

    Forests, as a rule, are reduced in response to climate change, but do not expand in colder and more humid climatic zones – therefore, forests are not restored enough to keep up with climate change, forest fires, insects and diseases.

    This is evidenced by the results of a new study by scientists from the University of Colorado (USA), the press service of the university reports.

    It is expected that since the climate becomes too warm for trees in certain places, forest areas will be shifted towards more ideal conditions, the article says.

    During the study, data on forest inventory for more than 25,000 sites in the West, with the exception of coastal conditions, were analyzed and identified:

    • Trees are not restored in the hottest parts of their habitat. It was the expected result;
    • For researchers, it was more unexpected that most of the 15 processed species of trees did not take root in areas with more favorable conditions, which indicates that most species of trees, most likely, will not be able to “switch” to a more adapted climate without help.

    According to scientists, trees are of great importance for people from the point of view of pure water, clean air, wildlife habitats and rest. – If the foresters want to preserve certain trees on the landscape, our study shows where they can still exist and where they may need help.

    The abbreviation of the environment was observed both in innumerable territories and those that were exposed to forest fires, insects and diseases.

    Thus, people will probably help to migrate trees, since rapid warming from climate change can exceed the ability of the population to recover.

    The reasons for this include an increase in the number of forest fires, insects and diseases caused by climate change, which may interfere with regeneration by destroying seed sources. As a result, the seeds should literally fight for correction, where it is colder, in particular on the slopes of the mountains.

    There are many things that prevent the seeds from moving uphill, including gravity, ”the scientists say. – It is necessary to create many conditions for wood to go to colder, more moist areas.
