Relatives applied for compensation for alleged Ukrainian refugees who were not actually staying.
A Ukrainian woman and her son were tried in the Czech city of Ostrava on charges of fraud for embezzling more than one million Czech crowns (more than 41 thousand dollars) from an employment center. This was reported by the local publication News.
Ukrainian Natalia Skarkova and her son Sergei Tkach, according to court materials, took advantage of the mechanism for receiving compensation after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
They submitted applications for compensation for supposed Ukrainian refugees, who were not actually staying, to the job center in Ostrava. They have no ownership rights or lease agreement for the apartment they indicated.
“In total, they submitted 170 applications for assistance for Ukrainians, but in fact they did not put them anywhere. Therefore, they illegally received more than one million crowns,” said the prosecutor in the case , Veronika Kocheva.
Skarkova and Tkács submitted applications for compensation for another half million crowns, which were not satisfied.
The fraudulent scheme was reported to the Czech police by the labor department, which discovered it through its monitoring mechanisms. The accused, who have lived in the Czech Republic for a long time, say they regret what they did.
The verdict in the case should be announced at the end of February. Prosecutors are asking the court for probation based on a plea agreement.
We remind you that the Czech city of Ihlava is planning to introduce positions of Ukrainian police assistants who will assist law enforcement officers in crime prevention. The city will apply for funds for the new assistants.
