The President of the United States also announced a possible increase in tariffs on European goods.
US President Donald Trump said at a press conference in the Oval Office that his administration could introduce additional tariffs on China next week. CNN and Associated Press wrote this on Tuesday, January 21.
Trump has said he is considering introducing a 10% tariff on all Chinese goods from February 1.
He explained that too much fentanyl (a synthetic opioid analgesic – ed.) is coming into the United States from China via Mexico and Canada. And, he believes, the threat of tariffs could force China to “strengthen measures against the movement of this deadly drug.”
“The 10% for China is based on the fact that they ship fentanyl to Mexico and Canada,” he said.
The US President said he had not spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping on this topic, but discussed the dangers of fentanyl.
“We haven’t talked much about tariffs, other than he knows where I stand,” Trump said.
CNN recalled that during his election campaign, Trump promised to impose a 60% tariff on all imported goods from China.
The US leader also warned of a possible increase in duties on European goods.
“It’s not just about China. China is the abuser, but the European Union treats us very badly,” he said.
“They are very bad for us. They don’t take our cars. They don’t take our agricultural products. We have a $350 billion deficit with the European Union,” the American leader said.
Earlier, US President-elect Donald Trump had a phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump assured that, together with Xi, he intends to do “everything possible to make the world a more peaceful and safe place.”
At the same time, US Secretary of State candidate Marco Rubio recently said that China is a threat to the United States. In his opinion, these threats from Beijing are the “strongest and most dangerous” in American history.
