Trump has repeatedly threatened to seize the critical maritime trade route that the United States gave to Panama in 1977, calling it vital to American interests.
Russia called on US President Donald Trump not to think about seizing the Panama Canal. The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the Panama Canal is legally owned by Panama and “warned the United States against attempts to recover it in any way.” Politico wrote this on Tuesday, January 21.
“We hope that during the potential discussions between the leadership of Panama and US President Donald Trump on the control of the Panama Canal, the parties will respect the current international legal regime of this main waterway,” said Alexander Shchetinin, director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to him, Russia reaffirms its commitment to maintaining the permanent neutrality of the Panama Canal and advocates for keeping this international waterway safe and open.
“The United States has no right to interfere in Panama’s internal affairs,” stressed the representative of the country that occupied part of Ukraine’s territory in 2014 and launched a full-scale invasion in early 2022.
The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and is one of the most important trade routes in the United States, with approximately 40% of all the country’s container ships passing through it.
Panama has launched an audit of a Chinese-linked company that controls two ports adjacent to the Panama Canal, amid threats by US President Donald Trump to seize the waterway.
Let’s remember that Donald Trump in December 2024 threatened Panama to remove the Panama Canal if the country does not stop charging what he considers excessive fees.
