The European Union must extend the economic sanctions against Russia for another six months – until January 31, to continue their effect.
EU ambassadors will be able to extend the economic sanctions against Russia for another six months, and Hungary will not block this decision. Radio Liberty’s editor for European affairs, Rikard Jozwiak, reported this on the social network X on Tuesday, January 21.
He recalled that the EU should extend the economic sanctions against Russia for another six months – until January 31, so that their effect continues.
“The situation is such that the EU ambassadors are likely to extend the economic sanctions against Russia for six months on Friday Hungary hesitates whether to vote or not, but the new administration in the US seems to accept the continuation of sanctions ,” the journalist wrote .
As you know, the EU changes the existing sanctions against the Russian Federation every six months, and this requires the unanimity of the 27 member states. Previously, this was a common procedure, but this time Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was first advised to wait for the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.
Later, the Hungarian government said that the EU should decide to extend the sanctions only after consultations with the new US administration, and Orban basically called for “throwing these sanctions out the window” and begin to improve relations with Russia.
The media reported that the EU began to look for options to avoid Hungary’s possible veto on the extension of the sanctions.
