The newly created Department of Government Effectiveness was left without one of its two heads.
Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, who along with Elon Musk was supposed to head the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), is no longer a member of this body and runs it independently, the Associated Press reports.
The reason is Ramaswamy’s plans to run for governor of Ohio next year.
“Vivek Ramaswamy’s role in the creation of DOGE was very important. He intends to run soon for an elected position that requires him to stay outside DOGE. We are very grateful to him for his contributions over the past two months and we look forward to him playing an important role in rebuilding America,” Anna Kelly, a department spokeswoman, said in a statement confirming the politician’s departure.
Trump picked Musk and Ramaswamy to lead DOGE, a non-governmental task force he appointed to find ways to lay off federal workers, cut programs and reduce federal regulations as part of his ” Save America” agenda.
The agency noted that Musk’s involvement raised ethical concerns because SpaceX, the company he founded and leads, has large defense contracts and competes for business with NASA. His electric vehicle company Tesla and other business interests could also benefit from Trump’s decisions.
As a reminder, the DOGE will be an advisory body and will work with the White House Budget Office.
Ramaswamy had previously said that Ukrainians were “glorifying a Nazi in their ranks – a comedian in cargo pants, a man named Zelensky.”
