According to the Slovak prime minister, the position of the Ukrainian president “causes great damage to Slovakia and billions of dollars in damage to the entire European Union.”
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico complained to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who did not respond to his invitation to meet in Davos and threatened “measures” if gas supplies of Russia was not restored. Fico wrote this on Friday, January 17, on Facebook.
He said that he discussed the gas supply situation with Scholz, who allegedly initiated this telephone conversation (the German side did not report this, as it usually does – ed).
The Slovak Prime Minister said that he reiterated to the Chancellor’s Office the principle positions of the Slovak government.
“Zelensky’s decision to stop gas transit through Ukraine causes significant damage to Slovakia and billions of dollars of damage to the entire European Union If President Zelensky’s decision is not changed, Slovakia will begin to take measures in revenge,” threatened Fico.
He also wrote that he told the German Chancellor that Bratislava offered a few days to talk with Zelensky next Tuesday night in Davos on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, where they were present.
Fico also complained to Scholz that “besides the invitation of the Kyiv children, Zelensky has not yet responded to this proposal.” Meanwhile, the Slovak Prime Minister believes that the meeting in Davos “could change the future of Slovak-Ukrainian relations.”
In addition, Fico said that the visit to Kyiv of the head of the Slovak opposition party “proves that they (the Progressive Slovakia party – ed.) are blind and do not criticize the side of Ukraine and prefer Ukrainian interests than the Slovaks.” He said that the PS representatives “for some reason forgot to add to the reports from Kyiv that in the event of a seizure of state power, they promised President Zelensky to support Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the presence of Slovak soldiers on the territory of Ukraine as part of the armed forces of the West directed against Russia, and both are completely contrary to the interests of the national state of Slovakia.”
We remind you that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, after his trip to Moscow, invited Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to a meeting to solve gas transit problems.
In turn, Zelensky invited Fico to visit Kyiv on Friday. Fico rejected this offer. However, on Friday, the leader of the opposition party Progressive Slovakia, Michal Šimečko, arrived in Kyiv. His party, according to the latest polls cited by Bloomberg, leads Fico’s party by 3% in ratings (23% versus 20%). After that, on Friday, Fico invited Zelensky to meet in Davos on January 21. Zelensky, in a commentary on Bloomberg, said that he cannot plan anything with Fico, because “he can go to Davos, but will end up in somewhere in Sochi.”
