Any ceasefire agreement must include a credible deterrent that will prevent Putin from regaining his strength and attacking again.
A final decision on the end of the war in Ukraine should not be expected in the near future. However, a ceasefire agreement is possible, and it must be reached from a position of strength. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this in an interview with The New Yorker Radio Hour on the occasion of the completion of his service at the head of American diplomacy.
According to Blinken, peace in Ukraine must be achieved from a position of strength – first by agreeing to a ceasefire with Putin’s strong restraint, and then by resolving the status of the captives territory.
“So, this (reaching an agreement – ed.) must happen from a position of strength, but there is also something critically important,” said the head of the US State Department.
There is one thing, he said, that must be included in any solution: “And when I say solution, I mean a ceasefire, because there won’t be a final solution anytime soon.” He explained, the ceasefire must be permanent and long-term.
“This means there must be a credible deterrent because Putin will use any ceasefire to rest, rearm, and then finally attack again,” Blinken said.
He also expressed his belief that the issue of the status of territories under Russian control “may not be resolved for a long time.”
At the same time, the current head of the State Department expressed confidence that President Zelensky will show in his policy a decision that is in line with the beliefs of the Ukrainian people.
Let’s remember that the former US President-elect Donald Trump delayed an early settlement of the war. His advisers now acknowledge that resolving the war will take months or longer.
