Trump has delayed a quick resolution to the war

A successful settlement will require extensive diplomatic pressure and compelling economic action. Meanwhile, the realities of the negotiations show a gap between election promises and the complexity of real geopolitics.

The Russian-Ukrainian war may last, despite the election statements of the elected 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, about an immediate settlement. His team admitted that what was promised had been an exaggeration along with an underestimation of the complexity of the situation. It was reported by Reuters.

Trump’s advisers now acknowledge that the war will take months, if not longer, to resolve. This unexpected change marks one of the main promises of Trump’s foreign policy – to achieve peace in Ukraine on the first day of his presidency.

According to Reuters, two Trump advisers who discussed the war in Ukraine with the president-elect said a realistic timetable for resolving the conflict involved several months. They called the mix of election rhetoric and an understated complexity of military confrontation a “day one” commitment.

Earlier, Trump’s adviser on Russia and Ukraine, retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, said in an interview with Fox News that he was making every effort to find a solution to end the war within 100 days. However, experts call this term too optimistic.

“To succeed, Trump needs to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin that further delay will have serious consequences,” said John Herbst, a former US ambassador to Ukraine.

During the election campaign, Trump repeatedly said that he would achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia on the first day of his presidency. However, after winning the election, he gradually softened his rhetoric, reducing his promises to his intention to “resolve the issue of confrontation as soon as possible.”

The Kremlin is showing conflicting positions regarding possible negotiations with the new US administration. Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said that the proposals of Trump’s advisers on the peace plan were “not of interest.”

Currently, Trump’s proposals include the following: temporarily blocking Ukraine’s prospect of joining NATO and creating a demilitarized zone patrolled by European forces.

However, Trump’s team admitted that the real negotiations were complicated by a lack of coordination among the new American officials.

Experts note that a successful settlement will require extensive diplomatic pressure and compelling economic action. So far, the realities of the negotiations show a gap between election promises and the complexity of real geopolitics.

Let’s remember that in November the media reported about the alleged negotiations between Trump and Putin on the war in Ukraine. Later, the Kremlin denied this information.

Recently, Putin’s press secretary Peskov said that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin still has no plans to negotiate with US President-elect Donald Trump.

In the past, the media reported that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin seriously underestimate each other, and this is fraught with great dangers for Ukraine.
